Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire
Your Love Story?
We met through a friend at a party. Our proposal did not go as originally planned. He had a romantic drive up to the Peak District planned after I had finished work but I was being moody and wanted to go home. We were in the house and he was in the living room and shouted me to come through and there he was, on one knee. I felt silly but it was perfectly imperfect in our own way.
What was your inspiration and vision for your day?
We wanted a rustic but classy feel and something a bit different which is why we went for The West Mill. We did not want lots of extravagant decorations and wanted to keep it simple but still stylish. We looked a lot at Pinterest and Instagram and took ideas from our own style too.
Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?
Because it is perfect in every way! The history, the aesthetics and the fact that it is an exclusive venue were all very appealing to us. Not only this but the staff are fantastic.
Did you do any DIY projects?
We made our own wooden log slices for the tables and we did our own table favour bags too but that was it!
Tell us about the details…
The flowers were the first thing we booked aside from the venue. Again we wanted a rustic feel to these but something also to signify the time of year well, whilst still sticking to the colour theme of the wedding. There was lots of greenery in the flowers with yellow and orange flowers and yellow seed pods. We had a large instillation on a sleeper above the signing table and the head table for the wedding breakfast, little and larger jars of flowers on the chairs ends and tables on all levels. All of these pieces moved throughout the day.
For the cake we wanted something simplistic and in-keeping with our colour theme which is why we went for a semi-naked design with green leaves and fresh figs as the colours complemented so well. The cake was actually the most surprising to us for how nice it turned out. We had white chocolate drips down every tier and a rustic bunting topper.
The decor we didn’t really have much as the West Mill speaks for itself and we didn’t want to take away from that.
The stationery is also something that really surprised us for how much we liked it and the company we went with Tilly Fudge is great. Vicky who runs this is so talented and genuinely a lovely person and we were especially sad to finish working with her. We want for a white background with green leaves and dark purple olive branches for the design. This carried on through from the invites, to the welcome sign and table cards. We had her do us name tags which we attached to each of the table favour bags. Our table placement board was incredible with an illustration of the West Mill Venue and names underneath. We called each of our tables the name of trees and for each table name board she illustrated the leaf that grows on each tree so each one was different
What was on the Menu?
Our alcohol supplier was Darley Abbey Wines. They are opposite the Mill House accommodation and the owners are so lovely. They have excellent knowledge of what wines are good for your day and did not disappoint at all.
For our wedding breakfast we had the following;
Starters – Butternut squash and chorizo soup (no chorizo for vegans)
Mains – Pork roast with all the trimmings / chickpea tagine for vegans
Dessert – Chocolate brownie with ice cream and the same but vegan for vegans. We also had canapés but I am sorry I cannot remember what they were!
What was your favourite part of the wedding?
Favourite memories of the day are getting ready with the wedding party, walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Cam. Laughing all day. Having our photos taken when we were alone for a while. Dancing all night. Seeing all our friends and family together. Coming back to the room as newlyweds.
Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?
Try not to overthink the day. It is the best day ever and even if things don’t go as you think they were going to it really doesn’t matter on the day it is still perfect.
