Your Love Story – how did you meet, was it love at first sight? Tell us about the proposal!
We met back in 2012 during freshers at Nottingham Trent University. We lived next door to each other in halls and became best friends from the get go. It probably was love at first sight but it took most of our friends to tell us we should get together before we actually did! It took us a good 6 months before we became ’offical’, which is a running theme with our relationship as it took Josh 10 years to propose! It was during a hike in Queenstown, New Zealand that he proposed. The setting was pretty spectacular so we can forgive him taking his time!
Your Wedding Day Vision & Inspiration What was your inspiration and vision for your day?
As Hayley may tell you, I (Vickie) had a very particular vision. Nothing crazy but being a graphic designer, and a very visual person, I drew out most of our wedding day on PDFs for everyone to follow. We wanted quite a classic and cohesive feel using the bridesmaids dresses as the main colour palette, which turns out to be a very tricky colour to match! Hayley, the West Mill team and Jess at April Days Design did amazing and went above and beyond my vision. They were incredible! One of my favourite parts of the day was running down all of the floors in the morning seeing everything being set up!
I (Josh) generally did what I was told and chipped in with the occasional good idea!
Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?
Josh is from Derby and when Vick would come up and visit we’d walk around Darley park. It was on a complete whim that we went to view The West Mill but once inside we couldn’t stop smiling! Vick and one of her bridesmaids decided May 10th was the nicest sounding date of the year after we got engaged and when we saw that was the only date available in May, we knew it was meant to be!
The West Mill were incredible and didn’t say no to anything we asked! The whole planning process didn’t feel stressful in the slightest. We knew we were in safe hands so had no worries!
Did you do any DIY projects?
Aside from the stationery, Josh has a very creative mum who made our ring pillow, the flower girls petal bag and even turned an adult tie into a child’s tie for our page boy! Very lucky to have her!

Tell us about the details – Flowers, Cake, Decor, Stationery….
Flowers: We wanted flowers quite simple but whimsical. We had an unusual request of ‘no roses’, as Vicks not the biggest fan, and asked for a white and yellow and let Jess run with it. She was INCREDIBLE! We also wanted a flower wall which Jess made happen with dried flowers. It was beautiful!
Cake: Kindly gifted to us by M&S thanks to their cyber attack.
Stationary: Vick designed all the signs, invites, place names, table names ect. Simple and classic, which sums us both up quite nicely!
Alcohol. Because No Great Story Started With A Salad (…or did it?) What was on your food & drinks menu?
We had his and hers cocktails! It was at this point we realised both our surnames started with the same letter of the town we grew up in!
A Robinson Romford Refresher – Vodka & Cranberry
A Dickinson Derby Delight – Spiced rum & ginger beer
Our favourite part about the food is we chose to have alternating deserts so some guests got a chocolate brownie some got a blondie! We had lots of compliments on this.
The Hangover Only Lasts A Day But The Memories Last A Lifetime Can you sum up your wedding day in 3 words?
So much fun!
What are your favourite memories or highlights of your day?
Seeing each other down the aisle, spending the afternoon in the sun with all our favourite people and dancing the night away! We were hesitant about our first dance but in the moment absolutely loved it! We chose ‘I only want to be with you’, which is quite an upbeat song which required quite a fast dance. So much fun! The baby goslings who joined the party kind of stole the show too!
Do you have any advice for future Brides & Grooms?
Don’t sweat the small stuff and just enjoy yourself! This goes for the wedding day and for the planning. Have fun with it all and trust your suppliers, they know what they are doing!
So many people say the day ‘flies by’, which scared us both, but we found our day felt like forever! We were both so in the moment and took it everything that was happening. We made enjoying the day a priority as we had been looking forward to the day for so long!
Brides, don’t worry about your dress! I stopped worrying about dirt and creases in my dress very early on and had a great time in it! At one point I had most of the sticks outdoors stuck in my veil and pretty sure there is goose poo in it too! It is now grey but it had the BEST DAY!
