Hayley has been with us for four years, during which time she has seen all sorts of weddings grace our venue! We delved into her best advice for wedding planning as a West Mill Event Manager.
How long have you been planning weddings, and what continues to inspire your passion for it?
I’ve worked in Events for 8 years, and have been running weddings here at The West Mill for 4 years, I can’t imagine doing anything else!
What’s your favourite part of the wedding day itself?
Seeing couples straight after the ceremony, when they’ve gone into the dressing room to have their time alone whilst we get guests downstairs. It’s a really beautiful, intimate moment, that’s just about them.
“We’re just reaching out to say a huge thank you for everything you did for us for our wedding. You made our day run so seamlessly and everything was perfect. You took so many stresses away from us and it was truly magical to walk into the venue on the morning and everything look how we imagined.

Hayley, your calm and sunny presence was much needed throughout the day, and Bev, we really appreciate how you took care of our guests, particularly with allergies and worries. Everyone has complimented the team at both the West Mill and Jenkinsons.”
What’s your no.1 piece of advice for couples in the early stages of planning?
Remember it’s your wedding, no one elses. Do what feels right, even if it goes against ‘tradition’. You’ll thank yourselves later. No matter what type of wedding you’re planning, it’s crucial to consider the type of atmosphere you want to create for yourself, and your guests. You need the vibe to dictate the schedule, not the other way round!
What’s a small detail that couples often overlook – but makes a big difference?
Comfort for your guests – consider the time of year of your wedding – fans for summer weddings, blankets for winter ones. Having a help yourself kit in the toilets is a nice touch for guests, stock it with safety pins, pain killers, deodorant, mints etc.
How do you help nervous couples feel confident and calm?
I treat every wedding and couple as an individual, and so will cater my approach to whatever they need. From the initial meeting I try and make it clear that it’s my job to run their big day, and that they just need to turn up. Nerves are normal, but I like them to know I’ve got everything under control, no matter what.
“We just wanted to send the biggest of thank yous to you for the weekend, and all of your help in the run up. We had the time of our lives and wouldn’t change a single thing. You helped us to stay chill throughout, we didn’t have to think about a thing, and had so much fun. You made sure nothing felt like a problem or inconvenience (even the bridesmaids accidentally getting into the wrong accommodation and wedding and causing us panic the day before!). Our guests absolutely loved the venue, and thought everything was put together perfectly. The groomsmen and bridal party all commented how great you were specifically. Please let the whole team know we are hugely grateful!”

What’s the most creative or touching thing you’ve seen at a wedding here?
I love when couples get super creative with their photos in, and around, our venue. It’s an incredible venue, with some great little corners for photos
What’s the first dance song you’ll never get tired of hearing?
Not a particular song, but I love hearing a band doing their own twist on a song, sometimes they’ll take a classic ballad, and put a more rock vibe on it, making it totally unique for that couple.
What’s your favourite colour scheme?
Black and white – classic, so chic, and can work any season of the year
What’s your favourite flower combination?
I love a whimsical, frothy mix, in any colour way. They look great against our industrial backdrop – a real juxtaposition!
What’s a dream wedding theme you’d love to help plan?
I love the understated luxury wedding theme – drapery as décor, high quality materials like silk & velvet, personalised favours, film photography, and consideration of the overall experience for your guests. Luxury doesn’t have to mean extra cost, it can sometimes mean the opposite – pairing down your plans and being a bit more minimal/selective with décor.
