Laura & Jamie

Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire

Your Love Story?

Me and Jamie met at a nightclub in Ashby around 9 years ago. It involved a lot of alcohol and some very cheesy chat up lines (from Jamie).
Jamie finally proposed after around 7 years together on a weekend away in Birmingham, that he had booked for my 30th birthday. As Jamie was too worried about getting the ring wrong (and probably couldn’t be bothered with the hassle) he decided to propose with a £10 argos one, luckily I was then able to choose my own ring from the jewellery quarter the next day.

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

I wanted to keep things quite neutral and fresh and avoid bright colours. I always envisaged that my flowers would be white with green foliage and Nadia did not disappoint! To compliment the white flowers I decided to go for sage green bridesmaid dresses that just tied in perfectly with everything.
With regards to the decorations I wanted to keep everything rustic to compliment the amazing venue. We had wooden lanterns specially made for all of the tables and kept all signage wooden.

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

Why wouldn’t you choose the West Mill?? The concept of it is brilliant. There is no having to move out of rooms so they can be set up for the next stage, everything flows so perfectly from each floor. Not to mention just how stunning the venue is!
Also the no corkage fee was a real added perk!

Did you do any DIY projects?

My maid of honour did all of the place names for me with her fancy handwriting skills and I made up the wedding favours by using little glass jars filled with peach schnapps and brought tags for them all saying “take a shot, we tied the knot”. We also used some empty gin bottles dotted around the venue that were filled with flowers and candles.

Tell us about the details…

Our cake was by The Melbourne Cake Company and was 3 tiers (lemon, white chocolate and raspberry, salted caramel) and it was just amazing!!! The cake was then decorated with the same flowers that had been used throughout the
venue.

What was on the Menu?

Canapes – mini fish and chips, pork belly and apple sauce and tomato and mozzarella crostinis
Starter – mini camembert with artisan breads and chutney
Main – short rib of beef with vegetables, creamed mash and a red wine jus
Desserts – trio of desserts, brownie, lemon posset and sticky toffee pudding.
Drinks reception – we used the outside bar as a gin bar, we had around 6 or 7 different flavours for everyone to pick from. Then we had our bathtub that we hired from booze bath and beyond that we filled with Coronas and Carling.

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

All of it!
However the singing waiters seem to be a highlight for the majority of our guests and especially Jamie as it was a complete surprise for him.

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

Just try and really take a minute for yourself to soak in all of the memories. The time goes so quickly that it seems to be over in the blink of an eye.
