Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire

Your Love Story?

Tom and I met at work, we are both teachers and our eyes met a cross the dingy school corridors! We secretly dated for a while as his Dad was our headteacher, luckily he approved of the match! Tom proposed in Barcelona after about 3 years together, it was perfect even though he was a bit sweaty!

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

Industrial meets Dior glamour. We used a 1960’s Dior stockings advert as our inspiration, it featured on our wedding stationary. We wanted it to be sleek, stylish and interesting.

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

It was everything we had been looking for, we love the stripped back industrial look, it is a reflection of our flats interior. When we first entered The Mill and I saw the venue for the first time, I burst into tears. I just knew thats where I wanted to be, surrounded by our loved ones.

Did you do any DIY projects?

We collected over 100 pieces of blue and white china to decorate the aisle and the tables, it looked really interesting and really complimented the mills style. Tom and his brother made all the wedding stationary which included a wedding newspaper ’The O’Donnell Times’, this kept the guests entertained and they loved reading it.

Tell us about the details…

The Cake was made by a wonderful Italian baker called Gabriella, it was Nutella and White chocolate on the bottom tier and lemon on the top, covered in white chocolate pieces, it was amazing! I picked my dress with my mum, it wasn’t entirely what I wanted but I could see it’s potential, so I had the back of it cut out so I had a low scoop down my back. I felt so amazing all day in it.

What was on the Menu?

We had burgers and tacos for our wedding meal, everyone was so excited to get proper food to eat at a wedding, people were raving about it before the day. We served gin and whisky alongside Tom’s favourite beers.

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

Standing holding my mums hand (she gave me away), she was shaking and asked me if I was nervous and I replied “no, I know everyone out there and I love them, plus I am getting to see Tom”. When I heard the first notes of ‘At Last’ by Etta James, I was so excited that I was walking towards Tom who was already in tears! It was really surreal to walk down the aisle and see everyone I know. Stand back, take it all in, its the most amazing feeling watching people flock into one room for you and your husband, its really humbling.
Having my sisters as my bridesmaids was so special, it was so nice getting ready with them and my mum, I will treasure that time together for the rest of my life.

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

Take it easy… don’t get carried away, we did exactly what we wanted and don’t regret a second of it. Its going to be wicked, remember why you are doing this. Let people help you, it makes them feel good. It is always a bonus when your husband (to be) is really interested in the details too, do it as a couple. Only invite the people that make you feel loved and good about yourself, life is tough enough, don’t invite bad feeling into the best day of your lives. The best thing we did was get a big house for all our family to stay in after the wedding, we spent the next few days in a bubble, it was so lovely.
Also, don’t underestimate how amazing your events planner is, Lucie was the cherry on the cake. She is unflappable and so kind, I felt as if I had a friend standing with me all day. She totally had my back and I will always remember her kindness.

Can you sum up your wedding day in 3 words?
