Wedding Style: A Contemporary Wedding Day With A Monochrome & Metallic Colour Scheme

Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire

Your Love Story?

Luke & I went on our first date on the 30.12.2009, nine years later we got married!

Luke proposed on my 25th birthday at The Shankly Hotel in Liverpool. Breakfast & champagne in bed arrived, we weren’t doing birthdya presents that year as we had just brought our first home – I opened my birthday card which said ‘Happy Birthday to my Fiance’ on the front, when I looked up (in complete shock) Luke was down on one knee! We spent the rest of the day celebrating at Aintree races.

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

Simple & contemporary was the main vision of the day. A monochrome & metallic colour scheme with a hint of marble complimented the venue perfectly!

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

We love the whole industrial aesthetic so fell in love with The West Mill at first glance. We particularly loved the fact that every part of the day is on a different floor & each of those is so special, it’s impossible to pick a favourite! From the ceiling & windows in the cotton quarter, the exposed brick walls in the breakfast room & the leather booths in the spinning room, we loved it all! I am also a clothing buyer so the fact that the venue is an old cotton mill felt like it was meant to be! All of our guests commented on how spectacular The West Mill was & that they’d never been to a venue like it!

Did you do any DIY projects?

We took on a few little projects for the day… The ceremony & top table light curtain backdrop we (Luke) made for an absolute bargain – we purchased the lights on ebay, a copper pipe & some cable ties from a DIY store, & it turned out perfectly! We also made the gin favours – the bottles/lids came from Etsy, with the help of an old school label maker, a funnel, the mother of the bride, a good few bottles of gin & a lot of patience, we managed to create some great favours. By tying name tags on them created by the amazing Betsy Design, they doubled up as place settings which complimented the gin bottle centre pieces perfectly.

Tell us about the details…

For decor we wanted to go down more of the candles & light route than flowers, so opted to keep them very simple & all white to compliment the colour scheme. I wanted mainly white lilies and eucalyptus in my bouquet & my florist suggested adding a succulent which just finished it off perfectly. We used eucalyptus & succulents to dress the venue & tables, alongside lots of candles which felt perfect for the time of year! The Daltons lights from Penny Lane Vintage just added the extra something to the drinks & evening receptions!

The cake we again kept quite simple, going for all over white & grey marble icing, the florist dressed it with succulents on the day & we purchased a silver wire ‘The Daltons’ cake topper from The Letter Loft which complimented the style of the venue & day! It was three tiers, with three different flavours – victoria sponge, coffee & carrot, unfortunately we were both too busy partying the night away to eat any cake but have heard lots of great reviews from our guests!

My dress was from Halfpenny London, & was everything I dreamed it would be & more – still to this day I have never seen anything else quite like it! I kept the rest of my look quite simple & let my dress do the talking – the back of the dress got the exact reactions I was hoping for!

What was on the Menu?

Our drinks reception we kept simple, prosecco & peroni! The canapes were mini oatcake pinwheels filled with cheese, baked sticky honey & mustard seed sausages & warm cheese twists. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get our hands on any of them but they went down EXTREMELY well with our guests!

As we were getting married so soon after Christmas we wanted to steer clear of a roast dinner like menu, but wanted to steer clear of a roast dinner like menu, but wanted to keep the food hearty & wintery – we went for broccoli soup with fresh stilton shavings, followed by steak & ale pie with buttery mashed potatoes, with a butternut spuash & feta vegetarian option. The pies were amazing! For desssert we couldn’t pick just one so went for an assiette of three of our favourites – lemon meringue pie, chocolate brownie & red velvet cheesecake! All of our guests commented that it was the best wedding food they had ever had!

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

We just loved that the day flowed effortlessly from start to finish & everyone seemed to enjoy every single second of the day! The whole day was filled with love & laughter which was exactly we wanted! Originally we had a sparkler send off planned for the end of the night, however everyone was having so much fun partying & dancing the night away so we decided to end it that way instead, which just finished the day off perfectly.

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

It is your day, do it your way! We sat down as we started planning the wedding & decided what were the three main things we want4ed to invest in for our day – for us it was the food/drink, the band & the photography/videographer. We would do it exactly the same all over again, our guests have not stopped talking about the food or band & we have the most wonderful photos & video to keep forever, the captured the day perfectly!

“A soldier should never cry in his uniform, but the day he marries the love of his life it’s the one battle he was always going to lose”This wedding video is emotional! Chloe and Luke’s relationship is one to be admired, with Luke serving in the armed forces they have fought through hardships most of us couldn’t even imagine! Their marriage took place at the stunning riverside venue of The West Mill Exclusive Use Wedding Venue in Derbyshire. The West Mill has quickly embedded itself as one of my favourite local wedding venues. It holds beauty indoors and out, so is perfect for both summer and winter weddings.
