Your Love Story?

We met at work and we slowly got to know eachother and became friends with the same social circle.  We got on really well and our stars soon aligned and we started dating and we never looked back, 7 years on we’re finally married!  

The proposal was at home one sunny evening with cocktails on our balcony, Chris caught me completely off guard and it was perfect! We spent the weekend celebrating in London. 

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

We wanted everyone to have fun and feel comfortable. It was important to us that everyone was relaxed and felt as happy as we did. That’s why we had the bridesmaids and groomsmen mix and match their clothes so they could dress to their own body-shapes and styles.

Other than that, we didn’t really need to do much to make it fit our ideal version of the day. Both of us are very bookish, so we added a few literary touches, but the West Mill really doesn’t need much dressing up.

We know that organising a wedding during the pandemic was so difficult. What advice would you give other couples who may be considering getting married within any Government restrictions? 

It was really difficult to decide what to do when no-one knew what changes would happen or when, we were so lucky to be the Friday before the numbers were cut to 15! We decided what was most important to us was getting married with our close family at the venue we fell in love with. So as soon as weddings were allowed to go ahead we knew we’d make it happen in whatever size. Our advice to other couples would be to choose great suppliers that you can put your trust in, The West Mill and all our other suppliers did everything they could to help us and made it far less stressful! We streamed the wedding to our friends and my family in Australia, it really made our day to be able to still share it with them too. 

Lastly, a micro wedding is just as special and beautiful so don’t be put off or worry about missing out, if anything, having a more intimate day made it more romantic and we got to spend more time with all of our guests too. 

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

We knew we wanted an industrial feel and the west mill was perfect, the ceremony room is breath taking so it was an easy choice, it’s about an hours drive from where we live but it was so worth it! The venue is so special and beautiful without any ‘dressing up’ needed, the package provided with all the extra touches like the signs and latterns was really great too! We loved the different floors and how your guests were introduced to a new space for each section of the wedding and there was no ‘turn around time’ needed. The grounds were picture perfect and we loved the running water from the wier too.  The team at the West Mill were so amazing, from the first contact we felt like they loved their venue and really wanted to create beautiful weddings too.  

Your Wedding Day Vision & Inspiration…

We wanted something relaxed, industrial and beautiful, we looked at a lot of barns nearer to where we live but they just didn’t reflect us. We live in a converted factory so the metal beams and exposed brick made us feel right at home! As soon as we saw the West Mill we knew it was the one. 

The venue speaks for itself so we didn’t need to flood it with decor, so we chose quite simple greenery with pink & gold accents. 

Did you do any DIY projects?

Not really, both of our jobs were super busy during lockdown so we kept it simple. We wanted to be sustainable where we could so we used old wine bottles (from the tasting to choose the wine) with lights in that we now use at home, the table plan is a canvas from our living room & our favours were bottles of damson gin my dad made with damsons from my brothers garden.

Tell us about the details…

Flowers & candles were by Maria’s flowers, we wanted a simple romantic style with hues of pinks and greenery. Maria created an amazing modern back drop for the ceremony with tall candles and bud vases on the tables and window sills for an intimate feel, we re-used these in the breakfast room to decorate around greenery table runners. Maria grows a lot of the flowers at her allotment so they matched the season perfectly. 

The cake was by Hannah at Bake Ashbourne, we had spiced apple and cream cheese cupcakes (Covid safe!) and a semi-naked gin & tonic cake with elderflower buttercream decorated with pink accents and gold flakes. The cakes were AMAZING, Chris has promised we can get a cake on every anniversary :).

Our photographer was Jennifer Peel, she was beyond perfect! We wanted natural photos and she captured every moment and all the emotion in it, we’re really pleased we can share those moments with our wider friends & family. She’s also a West Mill bride herself so she knew all the best spots too!

What was on the Menu?

We had Prosecco, a beer bath and gin & tonics for our drinks reception, due to Covid there was no self serving but the team on the day kept everyone suitably topped up!

We had some amazing canapés- crispy chicken bao, salt & pepper squid, sweet chilli prawns, goats cheese arachini were our personal faves.

We were really pleased we could provide our own alcohol as it was another element that we could personalise. Chris chose wine pairings for the meal and because we only had 25 guests we were able to have different veggie options to suit our guests, we wanted it to feel like our nearest and dearest were out for a meal together. 

Starter- chicken liver parfait with pineapple & chilli relish or veggie pakora.

Main- rib of beef in a port and red wine jus with mash and seasonal veggies, a chickpea & spinach curry or a veggie pie.

Dessert- sticky toffee pudding with vanilla icecream or vegan brownie that we paired with a sweet Sherry.

The West Mill had recently swapped to their in-house catering and we’re so pleased they did!! The food was by far the best wedding food we’d ever had and we got lots of compliments from our guests!

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

Walking down the aisle with my dad & seeing Chris was a very special moment.

Getting to talk to my family on zoom after the ceremony made them feel really included and was a highlight for me as I was really sad they couldn’t be there (thanks to our planner Anna for bringing us the iPad after the ceremony!) 

Staying in the Mill house with our closest friends was a lovely way to end the day.

The food was delicious and the service was really personal and so friendly. 

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

Choose everything that you love & is personal to you both rather than trying to please everyone else. 

Choose suppliers you can put your trust in especially during the pandemic, it really helped us to stay calm and allowed us to leave a lot of decisions in their capable hands.
