Wedding Style: A Relaxed DIY Wedding with Beautiful Spring Blooms
Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire
Your Love Story?
We first met at work, we were on a course together and although Pete says I stared at him all day it was definitely the other way round.
3 years later and a lovely little home together, Pete popped the question in Central Park, New York.
07.12.16 was the most magical Christmas ever in the best place on earth. The giant rock he proposed on will forever be in our hearts.
What was your inspiration and vision for your day?
We wanted a chilled Spring vibe in a quirky setting.
We 100% new we wanted to get married in Spring. Spring has such a nice feeling providing beautiful flowers and nice (ish) weather.
Also having 2 families become one and seeing them bond was what we were most excited for.
Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?
We googled the venue and we already knew it was the one. It was a quirky venue with a beautiful style.
We knew a lot of people were going to attend our wedding and we wanted a venue that didn’t feel cramped! Having the 4 floors and a beautiful outside area made sure everyone had space to enjoy themselves.
Also, we knew that we wouldn’t have to style the venue too much as it’s already stunning.
Did you do any DIY projects?
Me and the family did quite a few DIY projects. We made a hanging lantern backdrop for the ceremony room, an order of the day that stood in the entrance. I provided two beerbarrows that I decorated for the drinks reception and made 100 confetti cones, I also created my own table plan.
Tell us about the details…
After trying on 100 dresses and my entourage dwindling every appointment, my mum insisted going to the Bridal Boutique in Spondon. I was very hesitant to go after all my bad luck but I tried on 3 dresses and finally found the one. When you stand in the mirror knowing that you can’t pick a single fault and a smile finally comes to your face, you know you have found your dress.
My flowers I sourced through a family friend that owns The Posy Patch. I can’t rate Lynne enough. All I had to do was tell her the colour I liked and she sorted everything. I’m a girl that’s not massively interested in flowers but I gave her an idea of how I wanted my wedding to look and she did the rest of the work. I didn’t think I would be so blown away about flowers, but I was gobsmacked wen I saw the work she did.
My cake I sourced when I went to a local wedding fayre. I met Toni from Red Velvet Bakery. I had a 4 tier cake of all different flavours and they all tasted great.
What was on the Menu?
We had 3 different canapés, warm cheese twists, sticky honey and mustard sausages and mini jam and cream scones! The sausages were amazing.
For the wedding breakfast, we debated ages on a starter but as soon as we went to the taster evening and tried the mango and brie parcels we knew they were the one.
For the main we had breast of chicken filled with mozzarella wrapped in pancetta in a tomato sauce, these were served with heart fondant potatoes which everyone complimented.
For dessert we had white chocolate and raspberry heart shaped cheesecake.
The food was truly outstanding.
What was your favourite part of the wedding?
The reception drinks were my favourite, spending time with all friends and family and seeing them all mingle was really lovely.
We also had a really nice moment on the bridge when a local runner gave us £10 to congratulate us on our wedding.
Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?
Someone gave me this advice at 9pm on my wedding night “you have said enough hellos, now go dance the night away.” I’m so glad I listened, we had 160 people attend our wedding and as much as I appreciated everyone there I think I could have got carried away with talking and missed all the fun.
We had the best band play throughout our wedding (the Burgundy’s) I’m glad I got to appreciate them! I had loads of fun dancing with everyone and have some great dance floor photos that will last a life time!
Also don’t worry about the weather. Our weather wasn’t great all day! But Kathryn our events manager couldn’t have been more helpful! She even let us do our confetti tunnel inside so we didn’t miss out.
