Wedding Style: A Blue and Burghandy Rustic Wedding with a Visit from Teddy the Cavapoo!

Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire

Your Love Story?

We met though friends in 2009, whilst on a camping trip in Derbyshire. At the time Dan was living in Derbyshire, about to go travelling and Laura was living and working in Yorkshire. After four years together we decided to move in together and in 2015 we bought our first home together. In our nine years together we’ve been on a lot of adventures and felt complete when Laura’s Mum bought our pride and joy, Cavapoo Teddy, for her 30th Birthday.

After 9 years together, lots of people expected us to return from trips away engaged, so Dan wanted to pop the question when he thought Laura would least expect it. On Christmas morning 2017, Dan enlisted the help of Laura’s best friend, Teddy. With the ring box hanging from his collar, Teddy proudly ran to Laura as Dan got down on one knee. It was very emotional and intimate.

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

As a little girl Laura thought she knew exactly what she wanted on the big day. But when it came to it, all preconceived ideas went out the window and we planned everything together over our six month engagement. We had such fun thinking about what we wanted and our ideas, styles and tastes were perfectly matched. The main focus of our day was for it to be fun, happy and relaxed and we chose our team around that. Laura loves surprises so we didn’t want things to be too formal and over planned on the day. It worked perfectly and the day was full of excitement; the amazing venue and bridal team we had really helped us feel relaxed, allowing all thoughts to be of sheer happiness with one surprised gasp after another.

We’ve both said since we’ve never felt such overwhelming feelings of love and excitement mixed with sheer joy, as we partied with those we love most.

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

We often know exactly what we want, spending time thinking about what’s important to us and then going for it. We were looking for a mill or barn-type venue as it suited our rustic style and were so excited that after only 2 weeks of being engaged we were viewing and securing The West Mill. The venue was perfect for us. The spacious, quirky mill in its relaxed, quiet and quaint surroundings combined with being a no corkage venue, no hidden extras, and the freedom to do what we wanted, including having Teddy there with us on the day, really appealed to us, and on a cold and frosty January morning we just fell in love with it. The additional bonus was the Mill House; an eight bedroom, exquisitely decorated house within the grounds of the West Mill Venue. The night before the wedding Laura stayed there with her two best friends, Bridesmaids Jennifer and Amy, and her Mum Kate, it helped to make the morning so much calmer and easier and the beautiful breakfast made by the housekeepers really set Laura up for the day!

Did you do any DIY projects?

Laura loves being creative so she made most of the personal touches like the ceremony seating reservations, centre pieces, room decor and table plans. Laura enlisted the help of Bridesmaid Amy for writing place names and Amy created the order of events.

Tell us about the details…

After brief initial discussions with our photographers, videographer and florist, we decided to ask them to do what they did best; use their creativity. As we had, after all, fallen in love with their individual styles, personalities and originality, so we wanted them to have flexibility and freedom. They did us proud! We loved the romantic and fun style of JS Coates Photography and after looking at Jonathan’s work and reading his great reviews, we then fell in love with his infectious personality too. We decided to have two photographers to capture every moment of the day and without hesitation snapped up Jonathan and Chris – no-one else was in the running for us. Initially we hadn’t thought about having a videographer, but after we saw friends of ours who married in Spring recording their speeches, it was something that sparked our interest and within days we’d excitedly chosen Daiga from No Ordinary Films as our videographer as we loved her attentive, creative and professional approach. We wanted to make the most of the grand piano for the ceremony and after hearing James Hey’s effortless piano skills, we just knew he’d play Lionel Richie and Elton John classics to perfection – we were not disappointed.

Neither of us know a great deal about flowers, so other than Dan choosing to use thistle buttonholes, our florist Corinna from Bellissimi Flori was given full creative license to do whatever she wanted using our blue & burgundy colour scheme. Corinna created a beautiful back drop using a reclaimed wooden beam, stunning bouquets, eye catching centre pieces and an incredible floral mannequin. It was overwhelmingly exquisite and we loved supporting a local business, that was important to us.

Laura: “My mum helped me pick my Caroline Castigliano dress, it was very special moment. I fell in love with the first dress we saw. The lace and pearl beaded detail glistened from across the boutique and stood out from all the other dresses. It suited my style perfectly and having the dress and veil made to measure meant it fit like a glove. It was every bit my dream dress; it even had pockets!”

The surprise homemade cake was a two tiered naked white and milk chocolate design (perfect for a chocoholic like Laura) made by our sister-in-law Emma – she’s just incredible! It tasted amazingly moist and was so more-ish and there wasn’t a crumb left. She’s still keeping tight lipped about her secret recipe though! It was a wonderful surprise.

We wanted to keep some wedding traditions and felt passionate about twisting on others. Laura adores her Grandpa, so after he walked 5km each day for the last 3 months to make sure he was strong enough for the big day, he proudly walked her down the aisle. We also decided to have one of the Best Men Andy, and one of the Bridesmaids Amy, organising the surprise stag and hen dos, with the other Best Man Michael and Bridesmaid Jennifer, wowing us with their wedding day speeches. The stag and hen dos were perfectly tailored to our individual styles; Dan was treated to a long weekend away in Berlin and Laura was whisked away to France – Andy and Amy did a great job and they were both unforgettable experiences. Michael and Jennifer delivering heart-wrenching speeches really helped to personalise our day – it was certainly emotional!

What was on the Menu?

At our drinks reception we had Pimms and lemonade, Peroni and elderflower cordial. Canapés included: Fish and chips in cones, Venison and black pudding scotch egg and Cherry tomatoes with pesto infused cream cheese on parmesan shortbread.

As a wine lover, Dan carefully selected the red, white and rose wines for the wedding breakfast from Majestic Wine, we had more Pimms and Peroni and Laura had Prucia liqueur with elderflower. For starters we had butternut squash, feta and mint tart with fruit chutney and balsamic dressing. Mains was roast sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding with parmentier potatoes, savoy cabbage with smoked bacon and honey glazed chantenay carrots. Dessert was a mixture of our favourites; mini chocolate brownie, mini creme brulee and mini fruit meringue nest.

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

We can’t pick just one favourite part! Our top would be; how easy it all was to plan and how smoothly it all went on the day, being able to have Teddy there, oh and tying the knot!

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

Stay true to what you want as a couple, it’s about the two of you.

Have a budget but don’t be afraid to push it slightly for things you feel passionate about.

Don’t over plan things – play to people’s strengths and creativities.

Take inspiration from other people’s weddings.

We highly recommend taking time to go round talking to your guests, having a receiving line really helps you have a few moments with everyone.

Take time out as a couple to reflect and enjoy each moment.

Don’t have regrets, you only do it once!

Can you sum up your wedding day in 3 words?

We can sum it up in just one – PHENOMENAL
