Wedding Style: A Fantasy Themed Summer Wedding with a Hand Sketched Table Plan by the Bride!
Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire
Your Love Story?
We met in Cambridge back in 2013 and it just felt set from that first date – never felt anything like it! Chris proposed on 11 December 2016 in New York. He chose a very public spot under the Home Alone Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and I totally panicked, joking ‘Not a chance’ and ruining the romance entirely!
Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?
Our favourite place to eat and drink is Hawksmoor in London, and we knew we wanted to find something that felt as much like ‘us’ as Hawksmoor does. The moment we saw The West Mill, we were in love. We just grinned at each other the whole way round and couldn’t wait to show our families.
Did you do any DIY projects?
Each of our tables at the wedding breakfast was named after a fantasy place we love – from Hogwarts to Skyrim, from Middle Earth to Neverland, from the Millenium Falcon to Avengers Tower. I sketched all these worlds for our table plan, made table covers and place names out of pages from the books and comics, and even got FunkoPops to help people find their way to the right world!
We made our own donut walls, and Chris’s stepdad made an amazing welcome sign out of a vintage bike repair stand. We also saved up corks for 18 months and made a retro photo display from them all!
Tell us about the details…
My mum did such an incredible job with the cakes I’m still in awe every time I look at the photos! We didn’t want one big cake initially, just lots of plain (but yummy) cakes spread out. Her cakes are delicious and she just went above and beyond for our guests – amongst the many cakes was a vegan chocolate cake alongside a gluten-free chocolate cake AND a regular chocolate cake! Needless to say some special guests took lots of cake home with them in the morning.
I wanted a dress that felt like ‘me’, and Charlie Brear was simple but with a lovely bit of lace that nodded to more traditional dresses. I loved that. I did however change dresses for the evening… I love dancing and I really wanted to be free to jump around! So I bought a simple dress from All Saints and changed into that for our first dance.
My wedding present to Chris was matching custom Converse – sticking to the fantasy theme they were Justice League based, with personalised backs. They kept us dancing through to the end!
What was on the Menu?
We chose Krispy Kremes for our drinks reception on our homemade donut walls, and had prosecco, beer and cups of tea to accompany them. My mum just adores tea so it was a must to get her a good cuppa after the ceremony!
For our wedding breakfast we chose ‘Host a Roast’ which went down a storm!! Lots of hilarious photos of people carving on their tables followed and it really broke the ice, got people up and about a bit.
Very much loved the dessert wine we put on with our rhubarb and custard cheesecake too though – delicious!
In the evening we served pizza and cake, to make sure people had enough energy to dance the night away.
What was your favourite part of the wedding?
For me, it has to be the ceremony. From the moment I stepped into the Cotton Quarter with my dad and saw my little brother playing the piano, then everyone I loved in the room, there just to share in the love Chris and I were making ‘official’… it really was worth all the planning and saving up and nerves! My two brothers delivered the most wonderful reading, using quotes from all our favourite films to deliver advice, at times funny and at other times very soppy, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room by the end!
Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?
Remember that it’s your day and everyone just wants you to have the best time! It sounds obvious but it really is easy to get lost in that ‘host’ mentality, where you are so totally focused on making sure everyone else has a good day that you forget about what you both want!
Take some time early on together to think about what makes you, you. What makes you happy? What do you want to share with people? Everyone said that the personal details were what made our wedding really great, those things that were so ‘us’.
All our love stories are different – your wedding will be amazing because of YOU, not because of the decisions you make around flowers and favours!
