Real Wedding at The West Mill Venue, Derbyshire

Your Love Story?

We met through a mutual friend when we were 17, Will had just past his driving test we got talking and things went from there!

The proposal.. We got engaged on my 24th birthday (16th Jan 2014) I was still living with my parents at the time and had been to work, we had planned to go for meal at Browns Brasserie in Nottingham, my mum followed me around the house whilst getting ready. Little did I know will had been there a few hours earlier asking my dads permission. We had eaten dinner and out came a birthday cake with ‘will you marry me?’ on it, of course I said yes!

What was your inspiration and vision for your day?

We loved the feel of The West Mill and didn’t want to overdress or use too much decoration as it really doesn’t need it, we just wanted simplistic and romantic, we had a lot of candles etc.

Why did you choose The West Mill Venue?

We had initially struggled to find a venue to fall in love with but we visited The West Mill and booked the wedding there and then. We both walked into the ceremony room and knew it was right for us. Andrew showed us around and was so nice, Emily who was our wedding planner was amazing on the day!

Did you do any DIY projects?

We created a homemade photo booth with our Polaroid camera, we also made little boxes for the children who were there in the day.

Tell us about the details…

My dress was the first dress I tried on and fell in love straight away, the lace on my dress I knew would look amazing on the floors at The West Mill, as we kept the theme simple and romantic our cake was a semi naked cake with a range of berries. We had the bottom tier made from traditional fruit wedding cake and the other three tiers were lemon cake with lemon curd. Our flowers were a mixture of alavalacnhe and spray roses with gypsophila.

We hired Highly Strung as a surprise for our guests to play me and my dad walking in and the drinks reception, we walked into Stand By Me by Ben E Kin it’s something that will stay with me forever!

Each table in the wedding breakfast room were alternate in decoration, we had a mixture of hurricane vases with candles and flowers.

The speeches were amazing I never expected Wills speech to be as good as it was, he was so nervous every beforehand – he had no need to be!

The reception was amazing too! Our Dj kept the party going, There wasn’t a period of time where there was no one dancing. I loved that our mixture of friends and family were all together dancing regardless of whether they knew each other or not!

What was on the Menu?

We had Pimms for our drinks reception and supplied red, white wine and prosecco on the tables.

Our wedding breakfast was started with fig and goats cheese parcels with sweet chilli dressing

Our main was breast of chicken wrapped in smoked bacon, filled with sage and onion stuffing with puck fondant gravy.

Our dessert was a chocolate orange torte with mango cheesecake ice cream and mango coulis, I had Eton mess – it’s the brides perogative to be different.

What was your favourite part of the wedding?

It’s hard to pick one part of the wedding, the whole day was so amazing but for me it was when I walked in and saw Will at the end of the aisle.

Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?

Just take a moment to sit and take it all in, in the evening me and Will sat outside on a bench by the river and just listened to the party inside.

Also, appreciate every second because the day you’ve planned and built up to goes by in a flash – enjoy every second!

Can you sum up your wedding day in 3 words?

Over too quickly!
