Your Love Story?
We met through mutual friends when we were in High School, aged 16. We went to university 2 hours away from each other in York and Lancaster, which meant we had to go through a long term relationship for the majority of the time. When we graduated we took time out to live in Germany. This was the real test! We worked and lived together 24/7. But we had such a blast we knew it was meant to be.
Matthew proposed on the last day of our ski holiday in Bansko, Bulgaria 2016. He’d been carrying the ring around in his ski jacket all week. It happened that our holiday fell on a leap year too so I’d been teasing him all week that I was going to propose to him. I was completely unaware of this plans. On the final day the snow was falling, and he stopped me half way down the slopes to pop the question. He couldn’t get down on one knee as he wasn’t confident enough on his skis. (He still gets teased about it). But the proposal was perfect. He designed the ring himself in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, and it’s so dainty and suits me perfectly.
Did you do any DIY projects?
We got stuck in to quite a few DIY projects. By far the biggest was getting all the chalkboard signs written up. Both me and Matt learnt how to write them out for the charity occasion. Our house was covered in chalk boards but they tied into the venue perfectly and made sure all our guests knew the order of the day. Another big DIY project was our seating plan.
What was on the Menu?
We served canapes of grilled asparagus and tepenade, sesame coated prawn and pork belly.
Followed by brie and mango parcels, or pea and ham soup.
A full roast pork dinner – perfect for an Sunday wedding in October.
Followed by a trio of deserts because we both have such a sweet tooth.
What was your favourite part of the wedding?
Our favourite part of the Wedding Day was by far the confetti tunnel. We’d researched slow fall confetti in bright colours. It was a little windy on the day so as we walked down the confetti tunnel the confetti rose right up to the top of the building! It just looks absolutely magical. As the confetti started to swirl in the wind, surrounded by everyone we love, I thought instantly of my late Auntie Frances – and in that moment I knew that all those that couldn’t be with us on the day, were there in spirit too. It made our day complete.
Do you have any advice for future brides & grooms?
Just go with the flow, what will be will be. The West Mill is the perfect venue, so let it speak for itself. It really doesn’t need much decoration, so don’t go overboard or over think having added extras. Our guests just enjoyed looking through the venue and enjoying the drink, food and dancing – what more do you need?
Totally incredible atmosphere
